Well, it's complicated. Its origins are religious—it's a festival celebrating the birth of a great prophet for one of the world's main religions. Over the two thousand years it's had to develop, it's turned into a cultural as well as religious holiday, so that people who are not Christian also celebrate it because of how common it is in American society. Plus, who doesn't love presents!

They think that some traditions, like the decorative trees and the mistletoe—those are the ceiling plants—as leftover from another religion's festival that were assimilated into the Christian one.

Thanksgiving is a holiday to celebrate America. Christmas is just different.

I don't know why it's a tradition, but it is. When you find yourself under mistletoe, you're supposed to kiss whoever you're with. But tradition isn't like, a binding contract or anything. I don't think anyone would like, hold you to it.
